Vice-Chair of Education, Department of Emergency Medicine
Position Summary
The Vice Chair of Education will provide strategic leadership, operational oversight, and scholarly vision for all educational initiatives within the Department of Emergency Medicine, including undergraduate medical education (UME), graduate medical education (GME), fellowship programs, and faculty development.
The successful candidate will oversee the residency programs daily operations while advancing UVAs commitment to innovative curricula, collaboration, wellness, leadership development, and AI-driven educational strategies. The Vice Chair will report directly to the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and collaborate closely with UVA Health leadership, the School of Medicines Office of Educational Affairs, and GME leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Educational Leadership
- Provide vision and oversight for the educational mission of the Department, including residency, fellowship, and student programs.
- Oversee recruitment, mentorship, and professional development for residents and fellows.
- Foster a culture of innovation in educational delivery, incorporating simulation, competency-based education, AI-enabled assessment tools, and other emerging methods.
- Promote a learning environment that emphasizes diversity, equity, inclusion, and physician well-being.
Program Administration
- Lead strategic planning for educational initiatives and ensure integration with the Departments clinical and research missions.
- Partner with the Chair, Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs, and other leaders to align faculty development and mentorship efforts with the Departments goals.
- Manage program budgets, accreditation activities, and continuous quality improvement for all educational programs.
- Collaborate with medical school leadership to optimize UME rotations and expand academic opportunities for medical students interested in emergency medicine.
Scholarship and Research
- Encourage and support educational research and innovation within the Department.
- Develop and mentor faculty and residents in scholarship related to medical education.
- Seek extramural funding opportunities to advance educational initiatives.
- Disseminate best practices and innovations through presentations at national meetings and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
